Pizza & Science – A New Dive into Sensory Research at the Mat-Tech Lab

On Thursday, December 4, The Sense organized a new edition of Pizza & Science, an event that has become a key opportunity to discover the innovative projects of our research units from the inside. Nearly twenty participants took part in this gathering, combining scientific exploration with a convivial moment over pizza.

An exclusive visit to the Mat-Tech Lab

The group met at 10:30 AM at the Mathematical Technologies Lab (Mat-Tech Lab), located at Energypolis in Sion.
This laboratory, led by Professor at the School of Engineering and Sense PI Benedetta Franceschiello, develops innovative devices and mathematical approaches to study the senses and human perception.

Diverse expertise serving sensory sciences

The laboratory combines engineering, applied mathematics, and emerging technologies. It also benefits from state-of-the-art infrastructures, such as an HPC system and collaborations with partner hospital institutions.

Research topics

Ongoing projects cover a broad spectrum related to perception, vision, the brain, and artificial intelligence:

Visual perception modeling

  • Image processing and computational modeling
  • Optical illusions and visual perception

New devices (ophthalmic and sensory)

  • Rehabilitation tools
  • Support for orthoptists
  • Innovative devices such as MonkeyCall or the gustometer

Artificial intelligence in medicine

  • Eye-tracking
  • AI for the segmentation of brain and eye structures

Eye-Brain Dynamic Imaging (MRI)

  • Ocular motion imaging
  • New brain–eye acquisition methods
  • Mathematical frameworks for MR reconstruction
  • Extraction of raw physiological signals

A convivial moment to conclude

The visit ended with pizza at Trattoria d’Italia, located close to the laboratory — the perfect opportunity to continue discussions and strengthen ties within the Sense scientific community.
